He takes care of the kids after the death of their parents. James Henry Alden: is the wealthy and kind grandfather of the Alden children, allowing them a lot of freedom and always offering them advice. In subsequent books, Watch's bed is in Jessie's bedroom. Because of this, he became known as her dog. He had a thorn in his paw, and Jessie removed it. Watch is a Wire Fox Terrier (an Airedale in the 1924 edition), and the children found him while Henry was away at work. The lady was so charmed by the children that she permitted them to keep him. Watch was originally owned by a wealthy lady but ran away and was adopted by the Alden children. He acted as a "watchdog" when they lived in the boxcar and protected them. Watch: is the dog of the Boxcar children. He loves Watch dearly and Benny was the one who named Watch. His endearingly childish qualities and comments make him a favorite among young readers. He celebrates his seventh birthday in Surprise Island and continues to age throughout the original series, until he is old enough for a department store job in the last original book, "Benny Uncovers a Mystery." Benny is known for his love of all food and the cracked pink cup he found in the dump. She is the shyest of all the children, and sometimes helps Jessie take care of Benny.īenjamin "Benny" Alden: is the youngest child at 6 years old (5 in the original 1924 edition). Her favorite color is violet or purple and she often wears one of those colors. Violet is often very shy and loves playing the violin. She can frequently win over grouchy characters and is good with animals. She is the most sensitive of the children and is skillful at painting and sewing. Violet Alden: is 10 years old in most of the books. Jessie becomes shy whenever somebody calls her Jessica. She is not afraid of anything, adores the color blue, and is very strong. She is sometimes called Jess, but is mostly referred to as Jessie. Jessie is described as being very tidy and organized. She often acts motherly towards Benny and Violet and even Henry. Jessica "Jessie" Alden: ( Jess in the 1924 original edition) is usually 12 years old and is the older sister. In Warner's original books, Henry ages and eventually goes off to college in The Lighthouse Mystery. Henry also shows a knack for repairing things and is a natural athlete. He's shown to be calm, hardworking, rational, humble and very protective of his younger siblings. Henry James Alden: is the oldest of the Alden children in most books of the series, Henry is 14 years old (13 in the 1924 edition). The family name in the 1924 original edition is Cordyce rather than Alden.) (The characters are named here as they are in the revised edition of the original book, and its sequels. While the Alden children age in Warner's books, and remain younger in the ones published after her death, each book is set around its publication date.Ĭharacters Main characters Other books in the series have been written by other writers, but always feature the byline "Created by Gertrude Chandler Warner". Only the first 19 stories were written by creator Warner. The majority of the books are set in locations the children are visiting over school holidays such as summer vacation or Christmas break. In the subsequent books, the children encounter many adventures and mysteries in their neighborhood or at the locations they visit with their grandfather. In 2012 the original novel was ranked among the all-time "Top 100 Chapter Books", or children's novels, in a survey published by School Library Journal. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association listed the original book as one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children". The book was adapted as the film The Boxcar Children in 2014 and the sequel novel Surprise Island was released as a film in 2018. The children decide to live with the grandfather, who moves the beloved boxcar to his backyard so the children can use it as a playhouse. They eventually meet their grandfather, who is a wealthy and kind man (although the children had believed him to be cruel). They create a home for themselves in an abandoned boxcar in the forest. Originally published in 1924 by Rand McNally (as The Box-Car Children) and reissued in a shorter revised form in 1942 by Albert Whitman & Company, The Boxcar Children tells the story of four orphaned children, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden. The series is aimed at readers in grades 2–6. Today, the series includes nearly 160 titles, with more being released every year. The Boxcar Children is a children's book series originally created and written by the American first-grade school teacher Gertrude Chandler Warner.

Wynwood Walls and its neighboring counterparts, Wynwood Garden & Wynwood Doors, are basically outdoor art museums for murals. Whether your kids are obsessed with unicorns, or you want to take a few pictures with fairy tale inspired backdrops, this place will transport you into a world of fantasy, wonder, and excitement.ĭisclaimer: Macaroni Kid North East Miami and Miami Beach received complimentary tickets for personal use in exchange for sharing our experience with our readers. The center of it all is Wynwood Walls – a place specifically dedicated to art. The Unicorn Factory is open Wednesday-Monday, with tickets costing $38 per person (children 3 and under are free) or $29 per person for groups of 10 or more. Our tour ends, of course, at the gift shop where visitors can purchase a variety of kinds of unicorn, rainbow and colorful swag, as well as take the last shots. Why be a gym rat, when you can be a gym unicorn? With walls are covered in graffiti-style motivational quotes, a unicorn riding a sweaty and smiling nerd (is the unicorn riding the nerd? yes!), this gym makes “fitness” look as enjoyable, colorful and fun as possible. Gyms can be intimidating, not the Unicorn Factory’s gym. Yes, there is unicorn that you can ride! And I don’t mean a ride-a-unicorn halloween costume, I am talking about a life size unicorn painted in neon rainbow color in a night sky galaxy room. If your or your kids’ dreams involve riding a unicorn, this is the place for you. If your little ones are a bit hesitant to wade or swim through the massive ball pit, they can sit on the border, pet stuffed unicorns and have fun watching you. Kick off your shoes, store away any personal belongings and dive into a giant ball pit that screams fun, fun and more fun! Filled with thousands of plastic balls this is a rainbow of unlimited play, where imagination can run wild, while playing hide and seek, jumping into the pool or simply throwing the balls around. Picture your wildest, wackiest and weirdest unicorn-filled dreams - creators Michelle Kulikov and Julia Stein brought them to life in the Unicorn Factory.ĭuring our visit we are treated to a playful array of interactive installations, including the fantasy casino with a rainbow, the enchanted forest, the disco ball corner, the unicorn-themed playroom, and the room with a purple throne, where you can be a Queen or a King….and have the picture to prove it! What else can you do at the Unicorn Factory? Many things, but here are our top three: Moving along into a dark corridor with neon phrases on the walls, there are different environments on both sides that are meant to be look at, touched, and, of course, snapped and uploaded straight to social media. The venture into Unicorn Factory begins in a CandyLand themed room where we play at the Unicorn-inspired mini golf hole and pretend to drive a rainbow cart. Its multi-color facade is an explosion of pink with unicorns and goofy creatures, which make it impossible to drive by without noticing it and smiling.Īs we walk into the lobby, we are welcomed by a giant unicorn head made of flowers and the first Instagram-ready wall art, a pair of beautiful golden angel wings. On the corner of NW 5th avenue with NW 26th street, the Unicorn Factory is no different from the other warehouses in the area in terms of street art but at the same time it stands out because of its subjects and its colors. In a street lined with undefined commercial spaces and parking, graffiti-covered buildings blend into each other. It’s a rainy day (hey, you can’t have a rainbow without rain!), the street is empty apart from a couple of girls posing in front of a mural. We book our visit (you have to book your timed tickets exclusively online) for a Sunday afternoon, and when we get there, at 2600 NW 5 Ave, the atmosphere outside is kind of surreal. A dreamy and colorful ode to the creatures that have enchanted young and old through generations, this is an interactive space filled with eye-catching attractions that makes visitors happier the moment they enter.Īfter missing its predecessor - the Ice Cream Museum - I was over the moon, or in this case over the rainbow, when I was invited to enjoy Miami’s newest hot spot with my kids and share our experience with you. Where? At the recently opened Unicorn Factory, located just three blocks from Wynwood Walls. As if that were not enough, there are now unicorns, rainbows and fairy forests to make the City even more Magic. Miami is called the Magic City for a lot of reasons: the palms, the ocean, the lifestyle, etc. Today, Twinings still sells some of the world's best teas from the original store and in more than 100 countries throughout the world.

Adding/Dropping a Course and Its Impact on Financial Aid.Withdrawal and Its Impact on Financial Aid. Throughout the year, Sara demonstrated this openness to and empathy for the opinions, feelings, and perspectives of others, along with shrewd powers of observation, all qualities that makes her outstanding as a student of literature and burgeoning writer. She explained her choice as motivated by a desire to put herself in other people's shoes, view the issues from a new perspective, and gain a clearer sense of the issue from all angles. When we held a class debate about gun laws, Sara opted to speak for the side opposite her own views. Her caring nature and personality allow her to work well with others in a team setting, as she always respects others' opinions even when they differ from her own. Throughout the year Sara was an active participant in our discussions, and she always supported her peers. She is an insightful, sensitive, and deeply self-aware individual driven to explore art, writing, and a deeper understanding of the human condition. She publishes her poetry in our school's literary magazine, as well as in online magazines. Outside of the classroom, Sara is dedicated to her literary pursuits, especially to poetry. When called upon to give her thesis defense in front of her peers, Sara spoke clearly and eloquently about her conclusions and responded to questions in a thoughtful way. She produced an extraordinary year-long thesis paper on creative identity development, in which she compared works from three different time periods and synthesized cultural and historical perspectives to inform her analysis. Sara is talented at considering the subtleties within literature and the purpose behind authors' works. Sara is a talented literary critic and poet, and she has my highest recommendation as a student and writer. From the first day of class, Sara impressed me with her ability to be articulate about difficult concepts and texts, her sensitivity to the nuances within literature, and her passion for reading, writing, and creative expression- both in and out of the classroom. I had the pleasure of teaching Sara in her 11th grade honors English class at Mark Twain High School. The first example recommends Sara, a senior who loves to write and read poetry. Then we'll break down exactly why these letters of recommendation are effective. Let's look at some samples of strong recommendation letters, one from an English teacher, another from a physics teacher, the third from a history teacher, and the final one from a math teacher. A letter that expresses a strong vote of support, as well as highlights a student's impressive academic and personal strengths, can have a powerful effect on that student's chances of admission. That's why recommendation letters from teachers, especially those who know their students well, carry a great deal of weight in applications. Since they rarely meet the student in person, the recommendation letters, along with the student's own personal essay, play a huge role in illuminating her intellectual and personal qualities. They seek to gain a sense of the student as a "whole person," rather than focusing on pieces of who she is based solely on grades and test scores. The majority of admissions officers at four-year colleges, especially private schools, emphasize that their process is holistic. Why are Recommendation Letters Important? Important Note: Are you looking for job recommendation letters? If so, check out my great post here!įirst, let's understand the role of recommendation letters in your application. Keep reading for four excellent letters from teachers that will get anyone into college, along with expert analysis on why they're so strong. If you're a teacher, the examples in this guide will inspire you to support your students strongly as they apply to college. If you're a student, examples of great letters of recommendation can help you understand how to get strong letters yourself from your teachers. How important are recommendation letters in a college application? According to William Fitzsimmons, dean of admissions and financial aid at Harvard, they are "extremely important." So he continued walking for it had to be done, you were a regular civilian who led a regular life and dating him meant putting your life in harm for he had acquire multiple enemies through the years.Īs his silhouette began to fade, your knees gave out and you fell to the floor. I’m sorry for lying to you.” He continued walking ahead, never looking back, for if he were to look back, he would run towards you and ask for your forgiveness, and explain you how never meant a word he say. He took a deep breath and said “I don’t love you, I never did. Shouto stopped walking and whispered to himself, “forgive me, for what I’m about to do, I never meant you harm.” You clenched your fist in anger, your head was down, tears were falling down your eyes, “answer me,” you yelled at him but he just turned around and started walking away. I can take care of myself, I know that I’m not invincible and that I’m bound to get injured along the way but I’m not going to stop being a hero nor protecting others but there is one thing I can promise you, is that I will never stop loving you, no matter what happens.” You hold him tight not wanting to let go, you left a trail of kisses on his neck as you said “you’re going to try harder, if you want to get rid of me. The fire started to die out, and you walked towards him and hugged his back. You started to walk towards your home when you saw smoke near by and you immediately ran towards it. In order to protect you, he had to let you go, for there was only one thing he feared and that was you dying. He started to walk away and when you were no longer in sight, he let out a scream burning everything that was near him. Tears were falling from your eyes and you clenched your fingers, in your mind you were screaming at him, screaming at him how it wasn’t true, how he must be lying but you put all of that aside and walk towards him and slapped him in the face. “I’ve been using you all this time, you should have know this, for who could ever love you? Look at you!” he yelled. You tilted your head in confusion, you didn’t know what was funny, “I didn’t know you could actually be this stupid (y/n),” he said stepping away from you, “what are you talking about?” “Truth be told, I never loved you (y/n), I never did, it was all an act.” Your eyes widened and you started to shake your head in denial, “you’re lying, you have to be lying,” you said over and over again. A sob escaped from your lips, “the heroes are planning to launch an attack soon Dabi.” You said your eyes meeting his blue ones, “ let’s go somewhere, anywhere -” but Dabi’s laugh interrupted you. He caressed your hair, “what’s wrong?” he asked planting a kiss on your forehead. The drawing of the chapter is beautiful and super detailed.Your hands snaked around his waist, your head buried on his chest as you cried. After the fight All Might, agreed to train Izuku, so he can transfer his quirk to him, and make him a hero, by a quirk named One For All. No superhero wanted to help bakugo because of his explotions, but Izuku ran into the fight to help Bakugo. Then one day Bakugo is attacked by the same Mudman that attacked Izuku. But he discovered, that All Might had an accident that left him too damage that he can't hold for long his quirk. He talks to All Might, about him not having a quirk and how much he wants to be a superhero, All Might tells him that, it is imposible to be a hero without quirk, so felt verry sad, knowing that his idol disappointed him. In the middle of the cahpter, Izuku i s attacked by a Mudman villian, and he is saved by his idol All Might. Izuku is a superhero-fan so he knows their names and quirks. This first chapter is an introduction to the world of the Super Heros, where All Might is the gratest hero of them all. That's why hes bullied in school, by a guy called Bakugo (who makes explotions whith his hands). Izuku, wants to be a super hero but there is a problem, he has no quirk. Izuku is a 14 year old high school student, who lives in a world where almost the 80% of the population has quirks (special abilities). In this chapter, we meet Izuku Midoriya, he's our hero.
